Subject: Nominating for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize

Dear Sirs/Madams,

We are honored to hereby nominate Mrs. Nasrin Sotoudeh and Mrs. Narges Mohammadi, jointly, the two most prominent and internationally acclaimed Iranian human rights activists, for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

Mrs. Nasrin Sotoudeh, born 1963, and Mrs. Narges Mohammadi, born 1972, are the two most prominent peace and human rights activists in Iran with international recognition.

Nasrin Sotoudeh, a defense attorney is now in prison for a 5-year sentence which has recently been sentenced an additional 33 years plus 148 lashes in public for her stand on women’s rights.

Narges Mohammadi, a physicist and journalist, who has been a human rights activist since college is in prison on a sentence of 16 years for founding and being the vice president of Defenders of Human Rights Center in Iran, and one of the founders of Iran National Peace Council, both in cooperation with Mrs. Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Both Mrs. Sotoudeh and Mrs. Mohammadi have two children each of whom they have rarely been with due to multiple incarcerations and long prison sentences both for their human rights stands. Mrs. Mohammadi has not even been permitted to contact her children by telephone, which is the sign of the degree of cruelty of the Islamic Republic’s judicial system.

Mrs. Mohammadi has also been cited for “crimes” such as campaigning for the rights of women in Iran, forming an anti-execution activist group (LEGAM), and meeting EU Foreign Minister Katherine Ashton, in Iran.

Narges Mohammadi has been honored by the Alexander Langer Foundation Award of Italy in 2009, the Swedish Government’s Per Anger award for human rights 2011, the Human Rights award by the German city of Weimar in 2016, and the Andrei Sakharov prize by the American Physics Society in 2018. She has been suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and Abnormal Uterine Bleeding for which she has been hospitalized several times in prison approved hospitals. She is still suffering from same illnesses in prison.

Nasrin Sotoudeh is a human rights lawyer in Iran who has been representing imprisoned Iranian opposition activists and politicians opposed to the disputed June 2009 Iranian presidential elections. She has been essentially acting as defense attorney representing political and human rights activists, prisoners sentenced to death for crimes committed when minors, people of Bahai faith persecuted by the Islamic Republic of Iran, women protesting compulsory head scarf (Hijab), and supporting mothers of youth who were victims of Islamic Republic’s political mass executions in 1980s, and assisting in collection of one million signatures in support of Society for Children’s Rights.

Mrs. Nasrin Sotoudeh has been bestowed the Italian International Human Rights Committee Human Rights prize in 2008, the Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award by the American Pen Society in 2011, Southern Illinois University School of Law Rule of Law Citation in 2011,, the Andrei Sakharov prize of Free Thought by the EU parliament in 2012, and the annual tribute for a lawyer Ludovic-Trarieux International Human Rights Prize in 2018.

I, as a political activist for human rights and democracy for 5 decades, and multiple times prisoner of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and barred from teaching in universities, have been honored to have worked with these two great ladies in Defenders of Human Rights Center and in the Iran National Peace Council and other human rights events. I have had Shirin Ebadi and Nasrin Sotoudeh among my defense attorneys, and have been witnessing their devotion and self-sacrifice in carrying out the difficult task of appearing and defending their clients in the Islamic Republic’s courts of injustice.

Support letters and signatures by many Iranian and international scholars, professors from the universities in Iran and abroad, human rights and political activists will be provided.

Respectfully submitted,
